CVD stands for “Chemical Vapor Deposition,” a process that involves breaking down a natural gas, such as methane, into carbon atoms that accumulate around a diamond starter (known as a seed crystal) to form a new diamond. The crystal is then treated with heat and pressure to remove any coloration. Because this process is done in a vacuum chamber, a CVD diamond is considered a synthetic diamond.

Are CVD Diamonds Real?

Yes! Even though the process of creating a CVD diamond is slightly different—there are no vacuum chambers in the wild—a CVD diamond is chemically identical to a natural diamond. That means that a CVD diamond is just as durable as a mined diamond.

Why Purchase A CVD Diamond?

Because CVD diamonds are created, they do not need to be mined and transported through a long supply chain. They are more readily available, which keeps costs relatively low. Because they are chemically identical to natural diamonds, they are still valuable and will come at a cost, but they tend to be less expensive than naturally mined diamonds.

Ethical And Environmentally Friendly

CVD diamonds do not come from mines, so they do not create mineral waste by digging huge holes in the earth. Additionally, the origins of CVD diamonds are easily traceable, so you won’t have to worry if the diamond is a “conflict diamond” or a product of unethical practices, such as poor working conditions for miners or illegal trade.

High Quality

Because CVD diamonds are created under controlled conditions, the color and clarity of the diamond can be monitored. A CVD diamond can be rendered colorless during the heat and pressure part of the process, which is something that is hard to come by in naturally mined diamonds, and since the hardness and brilliance of a CVD diamond are not compromised during this process, CVD diamonds are often considered higher quality diamonds. Additionally, because CVD diamonds are real diamonds, they are graded on the 4 Cs (color, cut, clarity, and carat) to give an accurate comparison.

CVD diamonds are excellent alternatives to naturally mined diamonds. If you are considering a CVD diamond and would like to see the quality for yourself, contact us at Casa D’oro Fine Jewelry, and we will be happy to help you find the diamond that is perfect for you.
